Women all around the world are allowed to vote

Suffrage is one of the oldest issues that women’s rights activist have been fighting for. The struggle to gain suffrage is often referred to as the first wave of feminism. In 1906 Finland became the first country in the world to grant women the right to vote and stand in elections. Now, 105 years later, Saudi women have also taken a step towards equality with the decision of King Abdullah to grant the women of Saudi Arabia the right to vote and stand for election. The right for women to vote and stand in elections hasn’t always been the case in the West, for example in Switzerland women got suffrage as late as 1971.

The limits of legal reform?

Brazil - girl looking onDomestic violence is unfortunately not something unique to one culture. Across the globe vulnerable women face the same perils as women in Europe. Today we leave the confines of our continent to learn about other initiatives to end violence against women. Statistics from Brazil on domestic violence indicate that while legal action is one aspect of the action required to tackle this grave problem, more is needed to assist vulnerable women who are subject to domestic violence.

Positive development in the Finnish rape legislation

Last week the Finnish government announced a change in the criminal code as of June 2011. The new legislation defines all acts, where the perpetrator has been in sexual intercourse with an unconscious or otherwise defenceless person, as rape crimes.

The domestic tyrant

Sitting in a bus, driving through the dark forests of Finland last week, my carefree flicking of a magazine was interrupted by a young man in his early thirties. Shouting abuse, insult and direct threats to his wife/ girlfriend over the phone, this man told her “just you wait until I get home, I’ll get the axe I’ll cut everything to pieces”. After asking him to switch off the phone and stop shouting, I received my fair share of the verbal abuse as well. After a good hour of barking down the line, his phone ran out of battery power and he proceeded to sit quietly, sulking in his seat. Astonishingly enough, he managed to borrow a phone from a fellow (male) passenger and the abuse continued.
