Corrective rape: Shocking realities of homophobia

On May 4, a 13 year-old girl was raped in Atteridgeville, near Pretoria. During the assault, her attacker reportedly boasted that he would ‘cure’ her of lesbianism. In late April, the disfigured body of lesbian activist Noxolo Nogwaza was found in an alley in KwaThema, near Johannesburg. She had been raped and killed, apparently after an argument with men who had tried to proposition her girlfriend. These examples of ‘corrective’ or ‘punitive’ rape are presented by Navi Pillay, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, in an op-ed recently published in South African daily The Star.

Stop Rape Now is a joint effort by a network of UN agencies known as UN Action Against Sexual Violence in Conflict to prevent the use of rape as a tactic of war and respond effectively to the needs of survivors. The GET CROSS! initiative calls on members of the public, as well as celebrities and other prominent figures at the national level, to submit a photograph of themselves adopting the crossed-armed ‘X’ gesture, sending the message that sexual terror will not be tolerated. Hundred of photos have already been submitted; send in your own via the campaign website http://stoprapenow.org/.

Positive development in the Finnish rape legislation

Last week the Finnish government announced a change in the criminal code as of June 2011. The new legislation defines all acts, where the perpetrator has been in sexual intercourse with an unconscious or otherwise defenceless person, as rape crimes.

Sexual violence in conflict is not new. Throughout history, armies have employed acts of sexual violence to humiliate and destroy individuals, as well as whole societies. Rape, forced prostitution and sexual slavery have been part of conflicts all over the world.
