The Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) has played a historic role in the prosecution of wartime sexual violence. In fact, the ICTY was the first international tribunal to try a case exclusively for charges of sexual violence and thanks to the fact that its activities, treaties and conventions in existence throughout the 20th century have finally been put into practice, violations have been punished.
