Combating human trafficking in the EU

Human Trafficking is a crime against humanity. It involves the act of recruiting, transporting, transferring, harbouring or receiving a person through use of force, coercion or other means, for the purpose of exploiting them. Every year, thousands of men, women and children fall into the hands of traffickers, in their own countries and abroad. Every country in the world is affected by trafficking, whether as a country of origin, transit or destination for victims.

Human trafficking is also a serious problem here in Europe. We had the opportunity to ask Myria Vassiliadou about her work as an EU Anti-Trafficking Coordinator, a position she was appointed to less than a year ago.

We can end prostitution and trafficking for sexual exploitation now!

On April 12th, 2011, the UN Regional Information Centre in Brussels, in partnership with the Goethe Institute, organized an event about the sexual exploitation of children to mark the International Day for Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery. After the screening of the powerful documentary Redlight, which tells the stories of Cambodian children trafficked into prostitution, representatives of the European Women’s Lobby (EWL) and the MONA Foundation for the Women of Hungary, together with a representative of the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights were invited to engage in a discussion with the audience.

Sokha is gazing apathetically into space. Her sister Rena puts an arm around her, encourages her to talk about what happened to her. Sokha has been kidnapped and forced to work in a brothel, until her sister, an incredibly brave girl, manages to save her. The girls tell Sokha’s story to Cambodian politician Mu Sochua, a human rights activist. “The goal,” says Mu Sochua “is to turn them into survivors.”

Victims of human trafficking, award-winning actress Mira Sorvino speaks out

On 8 March – International Women’s Day – UNODC announced a new small grants facility for victims of human trafficking, a symbolic move given that two-thirds of trafficking victims are women and children. Victim support centres can apply for grants from the fund, but a lot more donations are needed.
